These days, many people who are trying to lose extreme weight are considering mini gastric bypass surgery. For many, it seems like the perfect solution for people in such situation, but is it really “the perfect solution”?
First off, it is quite a short surgery, and generally inexpensive. Surgery usually does not take more than an hour, and then the patient stays in the hospital for a day. It sounds like a great solution to ones weight problems right? Well, statistics show that only 4000 people worldwide are going to be having this surgery done this year.
So, why so few people?
The earliest form of gastric bypass had some major flaws. It used a small loop which was connected to the person’s stomach (reconstructed stomach in fact). It was shown to be quite an easy procedure, and was for the most part showing effective results. Doctors later found out that the surgery caused digestive juices from the small “pouch” to go into the gastric pouch. These could lead to several complications, which is why this type of operation was quickly stopped globally. Studies were done, and better ways were discovered, such as the Roux-en-Y gastric bypass.
With more and more people trying to lose weight, there is lots of competition rising up. The earliest form of gastric bypass has been altered, and is now done laparoscopically, and referred to as laparoscopic surgery.
Those considering mini gastric bypass surgery need to give other methods of weight loss a try. Many feel that mini gastric bypass should really be used as a last resort. Although a lot of research has gone into the method, it is still said to be far from perfect. It may appear to be a quick, cheap method to solve your weight problem, but complications may arise from it. Many studies have shown that it can lead to severe complications in the long run.
